Coffee Filter: How to Use, Materials and More

Are you looking to switch up your coffee game a little bit? Apart from exploring different brewing methods, have you considered using a different coffee filter? Apart from the commonly-used paper filters, you could also consider using cloth filters and metal filters. You'll be surprised by how they can bring out different flavours in your coffee! We've summed up the major differences in the handy table below.

Grind size	Consistency similar to sand or slightly finer than sand	Coarse, the grounds will look a little chunky.	As a general rule of thumb, try starting with a grind size that is slightly finer than that used with a paper filter, and adjust from there if necessary.
Taste profile	Able to filter out most coffee oils and fines. As such, produces a cleaner brew with lighter body.	Does not filter out coffee oils and fines. Gives a fuller-bodied cup with bold flavours.	Filters out fines but allows coffee oils in remain in the brew. Gives a cup that is somewhat between that of the paper and metal filter.
Maintenance	Before use, rinse thoroughly with hot water to avoid papery flavours in your coffee. ​Throw after use.	After use, soak for about 5 minutes in hot soapy water, then clean with a soft  bristle brush gently. Once in awhile, be sure to "deep clean" using a baking soda and water mixture to remove any coffee buildup. This will avoid any unwanted flavours from entering your coffee.	Thoroughly boil with hot water before the first use to remove any undesired odours. Clean and rinse thoroughly with warm water after every use. Store it in a container of water in the fridge and rinse again with warm water before you brew.
Sustainability	No. Paper filters are single-use only.	Yes! Metal filters can last for months, if not years with the proper maintenance.	Yes! With the proper care, most cloth filters can last for months. (Note: Some cloth filters made from organic materials may only be used for a few times -- always check the maker's recommendations)
