Picture
Chemex and V60 are two commonly seen coffee brewing methods, but do you really know the difference between both of them? We put together this handy comparison table to give some quick answers.
Comparison
V60
Chemex
What is it?
A V-shape conical coffee brewing device that slopes at 60 degrees (hence its name). You can find V60 drippers made from ceramic, plastic and so on.
An hourglass-shaped flask with a conical funnel-like neck, with its design originating from laboratory apparatus.
How to use?
Place the V60 dripper on top of a carafe/cup. Place coffee grounds in the coffee filter paper and brew by pouring hot water slowly over the grounds. Wait for water to finish dripping.
Same brewing steps as the V60
Need filter paper?
Yes, paper filter.
Yes, using the Chemex paper filter.
Ease of use
Brewing can be pretty straightforward, though one can opt to play with various variables such as brew temperature, pour time and so on.
Same as V60
Grind size
Consistency similar to sand or slightly finer than sand
Consistency similar to rough sand. (Note that the grind size for a Chemex would be coarser than that for a V60.)
Cost
S$10 onwards for a V60 dripper, from S$2 onwards for a pack of paper filters
S$60 onwards for a Chemex, around S$20 for a pack of paper filters
Brew characteristic
Very clean and lighter bodied. Possible to bring out more nuanced or delicate flavours in the coffee.
Full bodied and more developed flavours as compared to the V60, due to the thicker Chemex filter paper, which slows down the flow rate.
